Anime Relations: Black★Rock Shooter (TV)

So since MAL mods decided to delete my first review ever for reasons being that it was more of a rant (which it was), I have decided to preserve it here somewhere that people online can find it, read it, critique it, berate it, make memes of it, comment about it and overall learn that if I started at this level, everyone has hope to write somewhat well:

Beware, this is my first official review on here, so please bear that in mind. Also, there are some spoilers. Just saying.

Black Rock Shooter is an anime that focuses on two worlds. One being the human world where main characters Mato Kuroi and Yomi Takanashi live in. The other world being where a mysterious girl known as Black Rock Shooter fights battles in. The story follows Mato and Yomi's relationship develop in middle school as they go through a seemingly normal life, while in the other world, these two, represented as BRS and Dead Master, battle it out over the 8 episodes. This other world is supposed to represent their emotions and thoughts of each other as BRS and Dead Master fight. With a concept like that, it's understandable why fans of the show would call it 'deep'. However, I have a different term that I would use to describe this show

Let me explain to you where I'm coming from. I'm watching this after having watched the OVA for Black Rock Shooter, and I, like this show, gave it a pretty poor score. Why? Because the OVA didn't do shit to explain to the viewers what the fuck anything in that 40-minute period of time was actually supposed to mean! What was given to us was a show with two different stories, one being a school drama (if you could call it drama) and the other being of two girls fighting for 6 minutes. Now one could come to the assumption the link between the two worlds and characters, but the fact that the OVA never gave any indication about said link makes the hypotheses borderline irrelevant. Sure you could say it's purpose was to provoke thought from the audience, but honestly the only thoughts that this show gives us that is actually worth something is that 'bitches be crazy!’

So after watching the piece of shit of an OVA, I decided to try and give the 8-episode TV show a try in hope that maybe this show could revive the series from the shit hole that it was buried in. Did it do that? Nooooooooo! To be honest with all of you, it was painful to finish. And the only reason why I did in fact finish is because I have a policy to never drop a show, no matter how bad it is. But shows like Black Rock Shooter really test my limits! The only thing that was different from the OVA was that they tried to elaborate on the same complex crap that the creators called a plot! Did they succeed in doing this? Well... maybe a tiny bit, but the story is still absolute shit. The “drama” between Mato and Yomi is some of the most boring stories that I have ever had to sit through in an anime. I could go to a high school in the real world and see better drama between girls there than what I got. And I don’t care if it may match their personalities, because if it’s shit, it is shit! (quote me on that). Speaking of characters, these two have to be some of the saddest excuses for characters that I’ve seen in a long while. I’m talking worse than School Days. They are bland, flat and I did not care about either of them throughout the entirety of the show. And despite having hours of more time to work on making this show actually comprehensible, interesting and overall better, they completely fail due to a dull script, next to no character development, nothing interesting (other than the fight scenes I guess) and a terrible attempt at execution.

Now did this show do anything positive? Surprisingly yes. Despite having a horrendous story and characters, the art & animation were actually rather good and the sound was alright. Some of the fight scenes were actually enjoyable to watch.... But this show is still terrible and thus gets a terrible score. Some of you may be wondering why if the animation and sound is actually something positive that I'm giving it such a negative review, and to that I say that it doesn't matter to me how good those features are to the overall score of a show to me. Even if a show has incredible music and beautiful artwork, if the plot and characters are so bad that they made me want to vent my frustrations and anger for this show on a review like this, it's shit no matter how you look at it. I’ll repeat myself from before: if it’s shit, IT IS SHIT!

In short: This show sucked. You’ll probably get more enjoyment from reading this review, despite how abysmal my use of the English language overall might be, than watching 3 hours of this garbage. I thought that they couldn’t be any worse than the OVA, and I was mistaken. Now I know that no matter how much more time and effort producers could’ve given to try and make anything good from this show, at the end of the day I watched the same shit again, only 4-5 times more. Save your life and sanity from this hell hole, it does not deserve your time.

Damn that felt good!
