Canadian Premier Comes to America for Heart Surgery

The premier of Canada's east coast province is undergoing heart surgery in the United States this week because the treatment he is seeking was not available in his home province.

The announcement about of Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams' plans has triggered a debate since Canada prides itself on its universal health care system.

Kathy Dunderdale, the province's deputy premier who is taking over in his absence, said Tuesday that Williams decided to go to the U.S. for surgery after weeks of consultation with his doctors. She did not say where in the U.S. he would seek care.

Dunderdale says having the surgery done in the province was never an option. But she wouldn't comment on whether the type of surgery Williams was having was available elsewhere in Canada.

In Newfoundland, opposition Liberal Leader Yvonne Jones offered Williams her wishes for his full recovery. But she said he owes the public more of an explanation about exactly what procedure he needs and why he felt it necessary to go to the U.S.

Williams, 60, is an independently wealthy former lawyer and businessman who donates his premier's salary to charity.

This is the second high-ranking official from Canada to come to the evil US for a major surgery. I like the bit about how he is "independently wealthy." I'm sure Obama and Pelosi will wait in line for their surgeries in the future as well.

The Premier of a Canadian province comes to the US for treatment, yet Tiger Woods went to Canada. Interesting.

This guy once ordered the removal of all Canadian flags off of government buildings. I'm nut surprised he would rather go to the states; how he ever became premier of a province is beyond me.

Ordering the taking down of Canadian flags?. Fucking rediculous so it is. In your own country as well. This reminds me of an incident last year in a small fire station in a village in Scotland. The taking down of a flag thing I mean.

It went something like this: some fire men put the Saltire up on the roof of their station. And some time after an official from the fire service came by and told them to take the flag down.

Apparently it is supposed to be the Union Jack they were only allowed to fly (which is an English flag not a Scottish one). Two firemen from that station threatened to quit their jobs over it. I have not heard anything in the paper since about the incident. Imagine, not legally allowed to fly your own country's flag in your own country. It has to be the Union Jack instead. NAH.

Both the "Saltire" and "The Lion Rampant" would be flown if it was me. And I'd slit the first "turn coat" throat that tried to tell me to take them down. In Scotland, the Scottish flags will be flown if I feel the need to fly them!.

And before someone tries to be funny in their responce I will make it clear that I have no problem what so ever with the normal English people. Some of my favourite actors and actresses are English. But I fucking hate the politicians and royals there. For they are the ones trying to fuck Scotland over like they have done for centuries.

There are people who come out of the woodwork here, stateside, and try to ban the stars and stripes as well.

As to the OP, I wonder how superior the health care system actually is up there anyway? :dunno:

Not surprised... the only people who hate on the US system are the people who don't have insurance and/or money.

Exactly. This is why people of low socioeconomic status shouldn't have a voice. Of course your health care plan is poor, you don't make any money, thus you can't afford a better plan. If you want better health care, get a better job and quit living like gutter trash. Is it that hard? No, but the poor people are always the ones crying foul when they can't afford an angioplasty...

On a related subject, I believe that being a "citizen" should be earned earned, not given because your mom plopped you out on US soil... but that's another thread... :2 cents:

Oh, I see how it is. Just get a better job. Geez, I never knew it was so simple. People choose to work in shitty jobs. People choose to go to shitty schools. People choose to start their lives behind the 8-ball, so to speak. I see how the wacko mind works. Aha. We can't blame a system rigged to keep class distinctions in place. Let's just blame people:thumbsup:

Although, if the "engine of America" is the small business, why do small businesses get rid of healthcare for employees:wave2:

Why do so many people go bankrupt in this country because they get sick? Why don't people in our peer countries go bankrupt because of healthcare?

When Healthcare premiums approach $3000/month for a family of 4, is that when the conservatives will finally scream about healthcare costs? :dunno:

Because that's what's coming....

Instead of buying health insurance, I will buy health insurance stocks:thumbsup:

As for the OP....lots of people come here for treatment and lots of rich Americans go abroad for treatment. Lots of middle class Americans go to Mexico now.....maybe we're going to get Univ Healthcare whether we want it or not? Globalization...

I can see how that might be so...

Article:
Danny Williams, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, announced that the Canadian flag will be raised in front of all provincial government buildings today. The flags will be restored after being removed on December 23, 2004 as a statement to the federal government on the province's displeasure with talks on offshore revenue sharing.

"The decision to remove the flag was made after thoughtful consideration, as a clear statement to the federal government that their treatment of Newfoundland and Labrador was simply no longer acceptable," said Premier Williams. "The issue of offshore revenues is the singular most important issue in this province, and we have gone through six months of discussions with the federal government with one result. They are not living up to their commitment.

"History has proven that the only way to get the attention of the federal government in Newfoundland and Labrador is to get the attention of Canadians. This is exactly what we achieved when we removed the flags," added the premier. "Not everyone may have agreed with our decision, but we were able to focus the attention of the country on our issue."

Sigh...sleep a lot? Like for a few years at a time?
You see...read carefully, I'm typing as slowly as I can for you...the Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom...you know, England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales...like the Stars and Stripes is the United States of America flag; we fly our state flags lower than the Federal flag, that's known as proper flag etiquette. Some Fed buildings have no state flag, I'm sure.
The Union Jack is Scotland's flag too, as a member of the UK.
The English flag is a white field with a red cross, border to border.

So, you are saying just because someone doesn't have money that they don't have a right to have a voice? What kind of bullshit is that?
I find that EXTREMELY offensive, however you have that right to say so. But that does not mean that I'm not going to put my :2 cents: into this issue. However, lets get some facts straight here. The health care in this country SUCKS ass because the insurance companies dictate who and who does not get the appropriate care and they believe that it is up to them to determine what is best. THAT my friends is TOTAL BULLSHIT, if I am paying you for something then I have a right to tell YOU what the fuck is going on...not the other way around. I'm not saying that nationalized health care is the solution but I don't think that we should have to pay for health care. What if you were diagnosed with cancer or some condition that you don't have any control over, so now you have to suffer financially for that? That is complete BULLSHIT.

How about taking care of the people in our own country and in the infrastructure instead of worrying about what is happening in some third world country. Meanwhile we are in an economic mess that was created by those cocksucking wall street motherfuckers. And when people lose their jobs or whathave thanks to those rich motherfuckers looking to save money or increase their bonuses, then these people go without healthcare.
I do agree the system does not work too well, but there needs to be something else. And for those that abuse the system such as welfare and unemployment...there are plenty of things for these lazy asses to do as well.
But to say that only people of means or in other words RICH motherfuckers have the right to say what is best for everyone else. And kids if we know anything about history when the rich try to hold down the average person.

Lets remember something kiddies, this whole healthcare thing is a distraction, just like the "war on drugs", the wmd thing with Dubya and etc.

Maybe you should heed your own words.

People who think the Canadian Health Care System is all about waits, not getting to choose doctors, and inadequate services are people who have never gone through a serious illness (or watched a loved one do so) in Canada.

Best service I've seen anywhere on the planet, frankly. And I make a lot of money. And I have an exceptional health insurance policy in the States. If I get majorly sick, I'm bolting for Canada, and the American insurance companies can go take their large wad of cash and stick it up their asses.

Bastard corporations.

(can you tell my feelings on this matter?)

I think country's have an obligation todo-gooders about such opinions. Imagine if we did'nt have 20+million people here illegaly how much more people who are decendent of those who made America what it is today would have. Fooey!

If you've got a serious ailment they'll handle you nicely. However, if you want knee surgery or something of that nature then you'll be waiting a while.

Yes, the US health care system is the best in the world, no question,...if you have a lot of money. For everybody else, they're screwed.

Maybe we should extend that way of thinking to law enforcement, the military, and the fire departments as well. After all those people are just poor because of their own fault. I'm sure all poor people are just poor because they choose to be and not any other reason. When we let them die because the police won't protect them or we just casually sit by while an entire neighborhood burns down we can just tell them they should just go and get a better job which are always available, near them, and automatically guaranteed for them because after all it's all their own fault for not being rich like it is for all poor people.

Yeah, US health care is great - IF YOU CAN AFFORD IT! So a high ranking Canadian official comes here for health care? Not a surprise. Show me a low-income Canadian who finds it more affordable to come to the U.S. for health care - it's not going to happen!
