too repetitive, pacing slow...

it became significantly more boring after the trainwreck of the first 80 chapters... also a bit too melodramatic

for real though, did not like the ending. i love tragedies, but this one was a poorly executed tragedy, with a rushed, unsatisfying, unearned ending.

akane deserved to be in a better manga, and ruby deserved to have her own drama/idol sequel series where we follow her journey from her lowest moment in life to her rise to stardom.

would've made up for her getting sidelined throughout the manga, but alas.

this ending will live down in infamy. bravo gege

i liked each storyline (especially narukami's [long haired woman] storyline), but the transition between them was jarring, and aside from the main storyline, the others didn't get enough time to breathe. i would gladly read another volume of this, just to read more about narukami.

decided to bump this from an 8 to a 9 after realizing that

1: i was still thinking about the series every day weeks after finishing it

2: i bought three volumes within two weeks of finishing it

3: i re-read half the manga immediately after finishing

4. i read every translated noda interview

if you can get past noda's eccentric humor, you'll be rewarded with:
- great, engaging, well-written villians
- endearing cast of eccentric side-characters
- ainu culture!
- cooking manga!
- old western-esque plot
- ogata

only reason i can't rate this a 10 is because i wish we had an extra chapter or two for the ending

i actually really liked it at the beginning, since it avoided a lot of bl tropes + i really liked the historical backdrop, but it kinda jumped the shark at the end and fell head-first into an ocean of tropes
